“Shadowy producer S. Maharba aka Ross Abrahams airs out a handful of tracks that sound as though they’ve been tucked away gathering dust for the past few years – and they have. This is S. Maharba’s first original release since 2012 and the first glimpse of anything since his 2013 remix album S. Maharba: Remixed which built on his previous underground success and featured the likes of such dignitaries as Mono/Poly, Young Montana?, Shigeto, Mike Slott and Dibiase.
Memorial is made up of four slumberous cuts of immersive ambience, dissected folk samples, luscious instrumentation and washes of hissing, crackling textures all sifting through one another with seamless precision, filtered almost entirely of the fuggy beats one might come expect from past releases. Instead the EP sways more toward the loop-induced reflection of Heathered Pearls, Balam Acab or Bibio at his most tranquil and is steeped in the melancholic romanticism of William Basinski.
The signature black/white also receives a bespoke working over by artist Emir Eshahnovic.”
